At the center of our curriculum is a deep commitment to developing true proficiency in Spanish or Mandarin.  Our students spend roughly 40% of their time in pursuit of this goal, and we see confidence and pride in their abilities grow before our eyes.  Most of the modern world speaks more than one language, and in the United States, one out of five households speak a language other than English. When we imagine skills required in a productive, meaningful life in the 21st century, bilingual education can almost be considered a necessity.

Beyond our students’ personal delight in language acquisition, research provides valuable insight into the multiple benefits of being bilingual.  Did you know that most bilingual people…

  • are less distractible and have the ability to pay closer attention to tasks than monolingual peers?
  • can switch from one task to another more easily?
  • show more empathy in interactions with others?
  • outperform monolingual students on both reading and math tests by the end of middle school?
  • possess stronger executive functioning skills?
  • have a reduced chance of developing age-related dementia or Alzheimer’s?

If this short list piques your interest, we hope you’ll dip into some recent articles we’ve enjoyed at the Academy.
